I have a f1.4 50mm lens for my canon rebel xt. It’s a great portrait lens, photos like this are what it’s great at. And that’s a large portion of what I take pictures of these days. Its aperture of 1.4 lets me take photos in low light without needed a flash. It focuses well.

But, it’s a prime (fixed) lens. No zooming for me. Which limits the types of photos I can take. If I’m out taking Dash for a walk, and I want to get a lot of stuff in the frame, I can’t zoom out. If I see this cat running across a field, I can’t zoom in.

So I’m thinking about getting a zoom lens. But there’s so many choices out there, and all the lenses have their pros and cons. And it’s a fairly sizable investment as well, it could cost 2 or 3 times what I spent on the camera itself (but lenses hold their retail value pretty well and they work on different cameras).

I’m thinking a 24-70mm f/2.8 lens would be a good choice.
