I’ve read articles that say that running hurts because most people who are in some aerobic shape start out running further than they should. That is, aerobically, you can handle several miles, but physically your body can handle much less.
I used to have all kinds of problems with shin soreness after running until I read said article. The next time I started running I did so at a fairly short distance and built up from there. I haven’t had any problems since.

Even two miles hurts. More sore than anything else.
