How on earth am I supposed to clean a cast iron skillet? I’ve read that I’m supposed to rinse hot water over it and use a wire scratcher, but there’s still a lot of oil and stuff left on it.

Any ideas?

Use a wire scratcher and some dish soap, rinse with hot water, dry with a paper towel. Then smear a very small amount of oil on the bottom of the pan before you put it away. This seasons the pan.

I thought I wasn’t supposed to use soap on the pan.

Uncle Chris has been cleaning his cast iron skillet this way for 70 years, and it is the only pan he ever uses. Soap is fine to use, just use your finger to put on the film of oil

make sure you have a very good quality cast iron pan though

Mom is right. That’s what I do with mine. And once you have a seasoned cast iron skillet, nothing will stick to it, ever. So keep it always forever.

We find that a bit of rock salt rubbed around with a paper towel works well. The idea is to leave some of the stuff on the pan and that’s what helps the next thing you cook to not stick as much.

Good luck, and don’t put it in the dishwasher!
