For those of you who don’t know, I used to swim a lot. I was fairly good, even was the Oregon high school state champion in a couple events.

My main dislike about swimming: After a race, I usually throw up. There’s not much worse than feeling really tired after an event, absolutely sick to your stomach, and knowing that you have to swim again soon.

I wish I knew why I feel sick after I swim hard. And I wish I knew how I could not feel sick after swimming hard.

I had an adult swim meet today. I threw up twice.

Is it a chemical imbalance? It’s happened to me ever since 7th grade or so, so I suppose after puberty…? A few years ago, I asked a couple doctors and looked around online, but didn’t find any good answers.

It’s generally after swimming that I feel sick—probably because I’m really efficient at working in the water at 100% effort and intensity. Although, after lifting weights really hard I sometimes feel sick, but I rarely throw up.

Is it because you get nervous?

  2. Joe Says:

No, not as far as I can tell. I don’t get nervous at all in practice, and I throw up a lot then.

I always just assumed you were drunk at practice.

  4. Joe Says:

And that’s quite an understable assumption to make!

But it’s not true, in this case.
